Centre for Studies in Satellite Meteorology(CEMS)

Centre for Studies in Satellite Meteorology(CEMS)

Head of Centre : Jérôme Vidot

The CEMS was attached to the CNRM in 2019. Located in Lannion, close to the operational services of the Centre for Space Meteorology (CMS). Satellite observations now play a major role in Nowcasting and Numerical Weather Prediction, and require sustained research efforts to respond to constantly evolving needs and prepare for the arrival of new generations of instruments.

The CEMS conducts research on the macro- and microphysical properties of clouds, ocean surface variables and radiative transfer modelling with the aim of exploiting meteorological satellite data for weather monitoring and forecasting. It works closely with French and foreign laboratories, as well as with other CNRM researchers working on data assimilation, radiative transfer modelling, surface properties and cloud physics.
It participates in the transfer of its research results to Météo-France services, in particular to the Forecasting Operations Department. CEMS is involved in EUMETSAT’s major space programmes (MTG and METOP-SG) and in new scientific challenges in weather forecasting, such as the assimilation of data from new instruments with high spectral and temporal resolution, the consideration of aerosols and the estimation of uncertainties.
