My research interests cover wide areas in the field of atmospheric aerosol science, including aerosol-radiation and aerosol-cloud interactions as well as fire-atmosphere interactions and feedbacks. A large part of my research work focuses on carbonaceous particles emitted from biomass burning and fossil fuel combustion. It involves the development and deployment of ground-based and airborne instrumental systems aimed at determining the processes that drive variations in the chemical, physical, optical and hygroscopic properties of carbonaceous particles and how these evolve both spatially and temporally. Another research goal is to bridge the gap between observations and multi-scale models, including the validation and improvement of parameterisations from existing measurements and comparing data sets from different parts of the world to model results. I am currently the PI of the EUBURN project, which aims to improve knowledge of extreme wildfires occurring in southern Europe, the causes of their spread, their present and future impacts on meteorology, climate change and air quality, and to develop risk prevision tools for populations and public authorities.
